Description
The scene of a young man playing cards with his ace of diamonds is one of the most iconic images of The Cardsharps. The boy's eyes narrow when he realizes the swindler is a much older card shark. But the trickster's hand signals his movement. As he approaches the swindler, he pulls a card from his belt. The goal is to get his stack of coins.
The painting was on loan to the Museum from a private collection from 2013 until June 2021. Caravaggio is known for his dramatic style and use of chiaroscuro to portray his subjects. The artist had a great deal of influence on the development of Western art. The Cardsharps is a prime example of a realistic work, and many of his pieces are based on real life. In addition to being an enduring masterpiece, the Cardsharps inspired countless copies of it, including the infamous Cheat with the Ace of Clubs.
The paintings are highly sought-after and have been a subject of controversy over the years. In the 1670s, Caravaggio's version of The Cardsharps was sold for PS42,000 at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. Then, in 2006, a painting by another artist was sold at Sotheby's auction house for PS42,000. The Sotheby's sale catalogued the work as a copy of another artist's painting.
In the original painting, Caravaggio made an addition along the top of the painting, enlarging the image and fitting it into a frame. Then, the painting was passed down to the Colonna-Sciarra family, where it remained for 90 years. It was only in 1987 that it was discovered in a private European collection. Despite the fact that the painting has been a mystery for so long, it was finally restored to its former glory.
