Hippolyte Flandrin painted "Portrait of Madame Flandrin 1846" for his brother's widow. It was Flandrin's first portrait after returning from Rome. The painting was very successful at the Paris Salon of 1840. It was later published in Inconnues Celebrités by Stephane Baches and Patrice Beghain. It is one of the earliest examples of the style of neoclassical art.
"Portrait of Madame Flandrin," is a masterpiece of religious imagery. This painting was a tribute to the painter and his wife. He admired the work of her sons and was known for producing paintings of religious figures and portraits. The two Flandrins were also very close, and in 1835, they were already painting miniatures.
