Francesco Hayez painted two versions of The Kiss. The first version is housed in the Brera Art Gallery in Milan. A second version was intended for the Mylius family and is in a private collection. The third is a replica of Hayez's painting, and it has a white dress instead of the blue dress. It sold for seventy-five pounds in 1867 and is considered an equal to the Brera version.

Although the original is a very popular painting, Hayez's The Kiss is a far more political work than the original. It symbolizes the crucial union between Italy and France.
